Turn an Otic Exam Into a Butterfly Hunt

Tracy Baum, FNP

To increase the cooperation of preschool children during an otic examination, try playing the “magic flashlight” game. Take turns with the child using the otoscope to illuminate a fingertip. Then tell the patient that the otoscope can also light up his or her ears so that you can look for butterflies inside. You will usually be able to proceed without incident— and the game can be continued as you examine the mouth and pharynx.
