Joel J. Heidelbaugh, MD: My name is Dr Joel Heidelbaugh, and I'm a Clinical Professor in the Department of Family Medicine at the University of Michigan. I'd like to invite you to my session entitled "Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease: An Evidence-Based Update."

And in this session, I'm going to present an evidence-based approach to the diagnostic and treatment options for GERD. We'll recognize the alarm signs and symptoms and extraesophageal manifestations of GERD, and we'll work to differentiate between GERD and dyspepsia, and other related disorders including potential complications of advanced GERD. I'll review current diagnostic and treatment guidelines for H. pylori, and discuss potential risks of over-utilization of anti-secretory therapy. Lastly, I'll present a novel therapeutic class for treatment of GERD and erosive esophagitis.

Thank you, and I hope you enjoy the session.
