"Mommy Mouth-to-Mouth" Removes Nasal Foreign Bodies

Andrea Hillerud, MD

Removing foreign objects from a toddler's nose is usually a challenge, since the child typically refuses to let the clinician get close enough to attempt extraction. A method that I have found successful for objects fairly distal in the nasal passage is to have the child's mother perform a "mouth-to-mouth" maneuver, gently blowing air into her son's or daughter's oropharynx. This often provides enough pressure to dislodge the object from the nostril without terrorizing the child with the approach of an unfamiliar face.
