Editor’s Note - December 2014

As 2014 comes to a close, we’d like to take a few minutes to say a big thank you to you—our Consultant community. You are more than just our readers. You interact with us on a daily basis—whether it is sharing your case reports, asking questions, or making comments. You are truly our fellow collaborators.

2014 has been another landmark year for Consultant. Last year we introduced our new interactive digital platform, Consultant360. This year we expanded coverage to feature increased news coverage, daily trivia, and four Photo Quiz Challenges. 2014 also marked the launch of our popular Pearls of Wisdom and Nutritional Pearls series.

And last but not least, we were honored to be named a finalist for the 2014 Medical Marketing & Media Award for Best Healthcare Professional Media Brand

To wrap up the year, here are some of the best-read stories of 2014:

Saturated fat is your friend, not foe. Cardiovascular scientists suggest that the war on obesity and diabetes has more to do with high consumption of carbohydrates than fat.1

New home test identifies early signs of Alzheimer’s. The Self-Administered Gerocognitive Examination, a test of 22 questions that takes less than 15 minutes to complete, is a detailed cognitive test that physicians can use as a baseline to consider early treatment.2

Marijuana can change brain’s physical structure. Sustained, daily marijuana use was enough to physically change the structures of teenagers’ brains, affecting working memory, academic performance, and everyday function.3

Cause of herpes virus reactivation revealed. Researchers are now understanding how and why viruses like herpes can remain dormant for long periods of time and then suddenly reactive. The key is in the interaction with other viruses.4

All of us at Consultant want to be the first to wish you a joyous holiday season and a happy and healthy new year.

Sincerely,

Pooja Shah

Managing Editor, Consultant and Consultant360
